Don’t Let Your Hard Work Go to Waste: Essential Aftercare for Aeration and Overseeding

After servicing one might be ready to kick up their feet and reap the benefits of aeration and overseeding. However proper maintenance is crucial to successfully revitalizing your lawn.

Now this is not to say any heavy lifting is necessary! Just a little attention paid to these few key areas to maximize your results:

  1. Topdressing: An optional step, consider applying a thin layer of compost or topsoil to further improve seed germination. Starter fertilizer is also a great option to rake into the laid seeds. Be careful not to disturb the pH or add any pesticides at this stage as it may fry the tender new shoots.

  1. Soil plugs: While it may look odd or be tempting to ‘clean up’ all the little soil cores scattered after aeration; They do break up and add essential organic matter back into the lawn if left alone.

  1. Water: Lightly water the lawn after aeration to help the soil settle, making sure not to wash away any seeds. Keep the seeded areas consistently moist until they begin to germinate usually in about 10-14 days. Your goal here is not to overwater by submerging the seedlings but provide a nice damp top layer for the new lawn to establish itself. Once established, reduce the watering schedule to once a day without full saturation.

  1. Walking: You don’t want to trample any new growth. Reducing foot traffic for at least a week after servicing is recommended. If at all possible up to one month after seeding to allow for your lawn to repair itself before any recreational use.

  1. Mowing: The first mow after servicing is only after the seeds have germinated, around the 10-14 day mark. Set your mower to the highest setting for the first few times to avoid stressing the new grass. When mowing do not collect clippings allow them to recycle into the ground.

Don’t sell yourself short by not getting the most out of a lawn service already paid. You’ve invested time and effort in aerating and overseeding your lawn – now it’s time to ensure it thrives!
